With proper care and usage, veneers can last up to 20 years. Unfortunately, sometimes they need to be replaced sooner. Here are a few ways you can tell if it’s time to replace your veneers, and what you can do to ensure they last as long as possible.

Receding Gums

If you notice that your gums are receding or pulling back this could be a sign of gum disease. This is not only a danger to your gum tissue, but it can also cause you to lose your teeth and even your jawbone. If you do have gum disease, you will need to replace your veneers quickly before any further damage occurs.

Chips or Cracks

A chipped or cracked veneer doesn’t just look bad, it can make it harder to chew or speak properly. If your veneer is damaged, you should replace it as soon as possible.

Discoloration

While veneers are made of stain resistant porcelain, they still can change color over time. If you notice yours are looking dingy or discolored, it’s time for new ones.

They’re Uncomfortable

You should not be able to feel veneers on your teeth, so if you do, that could be a sign of a bigger problem. Discomfort could be caused by improper application, or even if they are too big. If yours have become painful, schedule an appointment with your dentist for treatment options.

Tooth Decay

If your underlying tooth becomes decayed and develops a cavity, your dentist will need to remove the veneer to repair it. After the filling is in, your dentist can replace the veneer with a new one.

How To Extend the Life of Your Veneers

Veneers are an investment in your smile, so naturally you’ll want to keep them for as long as possible. Here are a few tips for making the most of them:

Don’t use your teeth for anything but food (no nail biting, pen chewing, or package opening!) This can cause veneers to chip or crack.

Do not use any type of tobacco products, including cigarettes, chewing tobacco, or vapes, as they can stain your veneers.

Don’t consume staining foods and drinks. Though your veneers are stain resistant, they can still change color with repeated exposure to dark colored coffee, soda, wine, and chocolate.

Brush your teeth twice a day and floss at least once a day.

Visit your dentist twice a year for your semi-annual cleanings and exams.

Wear a mouth guard if you play sports or grind your teeth.

Use non-abrasive toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush, as these will be gentle enough to not scratch or damage your veneers.

Remember, keeping your veneers in good condition is the best way to ensure that they last for as long as possible. With good oral hygiene habits, you’ll have something to smile about for decades to come.

About Dr. Rose

Dr. Michael Rose’s passion for dentistry started at an early age thanks to his father, Dr. Stephen Rose.
